The NCRSP Awards/Recognitions Committee 

Encourages each local and region to submit nominations for the awards listed below. All submissions will be recognized at the banquet on March 20, 2024.  All PowerPoint slides are due Friday, February 23, 2024, to Lena Murrill Chapman at 336 337 0686, vicepresidentncrsp@gmail.com. Send slides in separate files according to the award. Large items (Brag Boards / Notebooks / Scrapbooks) are due by 11:00 AM on March 20, 2024. (First day of convention)


Purpose: To create, maintain and administer the statewide recognitions program.

Responsibilities: Create a recognitions program for state, regions, and locals in collaboration with Membership, Community Service, Legislative, Communications and Quality of Life Committees. • Reward achievements at the local, region and state meetings. • Administer the Betty Huffman Award Pro-gram as set forth in procedures.   Membership Awards  Legis-lative Awards  Starlight Awards

NCRSP VP and Interim  Recognitions Chair Lena Murrill-Chapman

Betty Huffman (1937-2015) Graduated from Ohio State in 1994 in Curriculum Development. Taught until 1996. Joined Macon County Retired School Personnel. Became a North Carolina Retired School Personnel advocate for retired educators giving back to public schools. Established a Gold Star program that recognizes retired school personnel groups who excel at volunteering. 

The Brag Board Award    

The Brag Board Award showcases the current year’s activities (Membership, Communication, Legislative, and Leadership) of the local/region. It is usually done on a display or science board. Use only one side of the board for your display. You may use pictures, photographs, documents, programs, etc. Brag Boards will be displayed during the banquet. Include the name of the local, region and member’s name on the back side of the board. In addition to the physical Brag Board, submissions must have three (3) PowerPoint slides with the first slide as an identity slide to include name, local and region. The two remaining slides should highlight the brag board. Slides will be shown during the banquet. All submissions will be recognized.


The Starlight Awards 

The Starlight Awards allow locals/regions to receive recognition for the many endeavors, projects, or programs. Locals may choose one or all three. The choices are “Legislative, Membership, and/or Communication”. Four (total) (4) PowerPoint slides, one for Introduction. The additional notebook/scrapbook is optional. All submissions will be recognized. 

The Legislative Starlight Award is designed to allow Local Units/Region, of various sizes, receive recognition for outstanding or unique individual projects they have developed and carried out in the community.

The Legislative Goal is developed and adopted by the NCRSP Strategic Plan. The examples that fall under each area are to be utilized as a foundation to develop an individual Local and or Region Program of the organization. Using the following criteria will align local activities with the mission and state program goals of NCRSP and promote uniform efforts to create a valuable community service and public recognition of the organization. 

GOAL AREA 2: LEGISLATIVE STARLIGHT AWARD - Collaborate with other community groups (League of Women Voters, AARP, etc.) in political activities. - Appoint and activate a strong legislative committee. - Survey members’ willingness to participate in political action (telephone, poll workers, voter registration, canvassing, etc. - Develop communication plan to notify ALL members of Action ALERTS. - Document members’ participation in grassroots political actions as outlined in 3 above (ex. Lobby Day). - Develop a formal plan to activate member influence on retiree/public education issues. Hold a letter writing campaign on retiree/public education issue, using logo stationary. Invite legislators and local elected officials to be speakers at NCRSP programs. Have local members attend Local Government meetings (ex. School Board, County Commission, etc.) Participate in a Regional legislative event.

The Betty Huffman Recognition Award 

The Betty Huffman Recognition Award covers five goal areas developed and adopted by the NCRSP Strategic Plan. Currently, they are “Membership, Legislative, Community Service, Leadership, and Communication. Submitted in a 3-ring binder along with six (6) PowerPoint slides with the first slide as the introductory slide and the five additional slides highlighting the five goals areas. Slides will be shown during the banquet. All submissions will be recognized.

 

The Service Award 

The Service Award recognizes the outstanding work of a local/regional member who has serviced the organization and who has gone beyond the call of duty to reach the goals set by the organization. Submit two (2) PowerPoint slides with one being the introductory slide. All submissions will be recognized.

The Membership Award recognizes the outstanding work of the locals who has increased and enhanced membership. Submit two (2) PowerPoint slides with one being the introductory slide. All submissions will be recognized.

The Presidential Award recognizes the outstanding work of a local president. A president who has gone beyond the call of duty to reach members, lead the organization and provide outstanding leadership in reaching the four goals areas: Legislative, Communication, Membership, and Community Services. Submit two (2) PowerPoint slides with one being the introductory slide. All submissions will be recognized.

The Membership Award NEW

The Membership Award recognizes the outstanding work of the locals who has increased and enhanced membership. Submit two (2) PowerPoint slides with one being the introductory slide. All submissions will be recognized. 

The Presidential Award NEW

The Presidential Award recognizes the outstanding work of a local president. A president who has gone beyond the call of duty to reach members, lead the organization and provide outstanding leadership in reaching the four goals areas: Legislative, Communication, Membership, and Community Services. Submit two (2) PowerPoint slides with one being the introductory slide. All submissions will be recognized. 

The Newsletters Award 

recognizes outstanding newsletters and their editors for their efforts to communicate with Region and Local retired members. All newsletters will be judged using the listed guidelines. Digital copies should also be displayed on five (5) PowerPoint slides with the first slide being the introductory slide. All submissions will be recognized.

Criteria

     ♦️ Writing, design, message development and effectiveness in showcasing members, their interests, and issues

     ♦️ Established a local RSP newsletter

     ♦️ Newsletters should exhibit good journalism and show broad and effective coverage of issues relevant to members (e.g. COLAs, insurance, health care, pensions, and community service).

     ♦️ Newsletters should be well written with visually appealing content, offer a combination of organizational and consumer-oriented information, showcase the members and leaders, and act as an effective organizing tool.
